1984 Corvette Overview
With no Corvettes being produced in 1983, 1984 brought about a new sleeker body style by eliminating the big wheel wells, notorious with the “Stingray” models, and was the start of a 12 year run with this C4 body style. 1984 became the highest output of Corvettes in the history of these high performance bowties. The 1983 Corvette wasn’t released to the public because of build issues, so the release of the C4 was pushed back to 1984.
The 1984 ‘Vette came in the coupe body style only with an optional targa top, but included a large glass hatch that added to the refined sleeker look. There was only one engine option being the L83 that produced 205hp and 290 lb-ft of torque from a 350ci cast iron block, a carry over from the C3’s. This left many Corvette owners with their only options being with the transmission, manual or automatic, and the interior, color and material.
The C4 Corvettes big selling point was its extraordinary handling, which at the time was considered the forerunner for performance cars around the world. This came about with a lower ride height and a stiffened chassis that in return had Corvette owners describing their experience of entering and leaving the car as “falling in, and climbing out”. Many of the options offered with the first year of the C4 would carry over to other years as well as many new options to come.
